Work performed under the Master's in Journalism at the University Fernando Pessoa, who emerges as the culmination of an entire educational process aimed at obtaining a Masters degree in Journalism. The theme of this work is "The Creation and Implementation of a tactical program in interactive broadcasts of football and basketball". The relevance of this issue relates to a new reality in regard to access to information by the public due to the decentralization of communicative intelligence and subsequent customization of information content. This study aimed to evaluate the possibility of creation and the consequent imposition of a tactical system for interactive sports broadcasts, including technological aspects and advantages / disadvantages that entails. In order to achieve these objectives, was perfomed a descriptive and contextual study (based on the presented literature), produced an online site and interviewed three television commentators, specializing in football and basketball. Finally, we present the most important aspects related to the project, concluding that the tactical program devised puts into practice the principles of the “Post-Information Era" and improved largely the way that viewers watch and understand television broadcasts of football and basketball. The tactical interactive program is an important supplement to the public, allowing it to understand the tactical explanations of the commentators and view matches the way that best understands (putting into practice the principle of decentralization and selfcustomization of information content)

Advances in the magnetic sensing technology have been driven by the increasing demand for the capability of measuring ultrasensitive magnetic fields. Among other emerging applications, the detection of magnetic fields in the picotesla range is crucial for biomedical applications. In this work Picosense reports a millimeter-scale, low-power hybrid magnetoresistive-piezoelectric magnetometer with subnanotesla sensitivity at low frequency. Through an innovative noise-cancelation mechanism, the 1/f noise in the MR sensors is surpassed by the mechanical modulation of the external magnetic fields in the high frequency regime. A modulation efficiency of 13% was obtained enabling a final device's sensitivity of ~950 pT/Hz1/2 at 1 Hz. This hybrid device proved to be capable of measuring biomagnetic signals generated in the heart in an unshielded environment. This result paves the way for the development of a portable, contactless, low-cost and low-power magnetocardiography device

Constitutive modeling and mechanical behavior prediction of biodegradable polymers during degradation

A large range of biodegradable polymers has been used to produce implantable medicaldevices, such as suture fibers, fixation screws and soft tissue engineering devices. Apartfrom biological compatibility, these devices should also be functional compatible andperform adequate mechanical temporary support during the healing process. Themechanical behavior of biodegradable polymers is known to be rate dependent and toexhibit hysteresis upon cyclic loading. On the other hand, ductility, toughness andstrength of the material decay during hydrolytic degradation. Continuum basedmechanical models can be used as dimensioning tools for biodegradable polymericdevices, since they enable to predict its mechanical behavior in a complex load andenvironment scenario, during the hydrolytic degradation process. The existing models can be divided into two categories: the time-dependent models andthe time-independent models. Linear elastic or non-linear elastic models, such as elastoplasticor hyperelastic models, can simulate the time-independent response, whichcorresponds to the relaxed configuration and represent the relaxed state. However, theseapproaches neglect the time-dependent mechanical behavior. To consider timedependency, dissipative elements must be used in the model formulation.A revision of the three-dimensional constitutive models generally used for polymers ispresented in this chapter. These models are based on the concept of networks, combiningelastic, sliding and dissipative elements, in order to simulate the time-dependentmechanical behavior, although neglecting changes in the properties of the material duringhydrolytic degradation process. Thus, some of these models were recently adapted toaddress the hydrolytic degradation process. A common method consists on becomingsome of the material model parameters dependent on a scalar variable, which expressesthe hydrolytic damage.Furthermore, the advantages and limitations of the models arediscussed, based on the correlation between predictions and experimental results of ablend of polylactic acid and polycaprolactone (PLA-PCL), which include monotonictensile tests at different strain rates and quasi-static cyclic unloading-reloading

Multiple incursion pathways for Helicoverpa armigera in Brazil show its genetic diversity spreading in a connected world

The Old World cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera was first detected in Brazil with subsequent reports from Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia, and Uruguay. This pattern suggests that the H. armigera spread across the South American continent following incursions into northern/central Brazil, however, this hypothesis has not been tested. Here we compare northern and central Brazilian H. armigera mtDNA COI haplotypes with those from southern Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. We infer spatial genetic and gene flow patterns of this dispersive pest in the agricultural landscape of South America. We show that the spatial distribution of H. armigera mtDNA haplotypes and its inferred gene flow patterns in the southwestern region of South America exhibited signatures inconsistent with a single incursion hypothesis. Simulations on spatial distribution patterns show that the detection of rare and/or the absence of dominant mtDNA haplotypes in southern H. armigera populations are inconsistent with genetic signatures observed in northern and central Brazil. Incursions of H. armigera into the New World are therefore likely to have involved independent events in northern/central Brazil, and southern Brazil/Uruguay-Argentina-Paraguay. This study demonstrates the significant biosecurity challenges facing the South American continent, and highlights alternate pathways for introductions of alien species into the New World

A Novel Form of Environmental Pragmatism

UIDB/00183/2020 UIDP/00183/2020Moral reasoning typically informs environmental decision-making by measuring the possible outcomes of policies or actions in light of a preferred ethical theory. This method is subject to many problems. Environmental pragmatism tries to overcome them, but it suffers also from some pitfalls. This paper pro- poses a new method of environmental pragmatism that avoids the problems of both the traditional method of environmental moral reasoning and of the general versions of environmental pragmatism. We call it ‘justificatory moral pluralism’ – it develops the intuition that normative ethical theories need not be mutually exclusive. This leaves room for important forms of pluralist environmental ethics that do not require a once-and-for-all prior commitment to an ethical theory when deciding about policies or courses of action related to the protection of the environment. Justificatory moral pluralism offers a viable solution to the recurrent conflicts between efficient environmental decisions and the need for moral reasoning.authorsversionpublishe

Apoptosis, metallothionein, and bioavailable metals in domestic mice (Mus musculus L.) from a human-inhabited volcanic area

Copyright © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2007.The influence of extreme environments of volcanic origin over vertebrates and the cellular responses that these may give are almost unknown. The main objectives were to evaluate the exposure of mice to metals in the interior of houses of a small village settled inside a volcanic crater (Furnas, Azores), and the levels of apoptosis and metallothionein in the organs (lung, liver, and kidney) of those animals. Adult mice (Mus musculus) were captured in two areas, one with volcanic activity and the other without it over the last three centuries. In the excised organs, analysis of metals (Al, Cd, Pb, Zn), TUNEL assay for apoptosis, and immunohistochemistry for metallothionein were undertook. Mice from the area with volcanic activity presented higher levels of apoptosis and metallothionein than those from the area without volcanic activity. Such results were in agreement with the differences in metal burdens of the three organs, and interestingly these concentrations were similar to or higher than others found in heavily polluted areas outside the Azores. Thus, there may be a high risk of harmful effects for organisms, including humans, inhabiting areas with volcanism, where hazardous gases and metals in the air are very common during the entire day or even all year round.Centro de Investigação em Recursos Naturais, Ponta Delgada, Portuga
